 # EU Green Deal Compliance

   ##  What is the EU Green Deal? 

The EU Green Deal is the European Union’s strategy to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050. The framework aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, boost clean energy, and promote circular economy principles across industries, including the construction sector.

 In order to reduce the environmental footprint of the building industry, there are two tidal waves of change ongoing:

1. **Energy Efficiency &amp; Renovation**

75% of European buildings are not energy efficient. We need to focus on reducing their operational carbon – which account for 70% of a building’s total emissions. The tasks at hand for Europe are clear:

- By 2030, 100% of new constructions should have operational carbon levels close to zero.
- By 2030, 80% of existing energy-inefficient buildings should be renovated with an aim to cut their operational carbon levels by 50%, compared to 1990 figures.

2. **Sustainability &amp; the Circular Economy**

The second focal point of the construction sector looks at reducing material usage, waste and limiting buildings’ embodied carbon levels – which account for 30% of a building’s total emissions. What does this mean for Europe?

- By 2030, more than 50% of components used in the construction sector should be low-carbon (recycled or manufactured with clean energy).
- By 2030, the embodied carbon of these building components should be cut by 50%, compared to 1990 figures.
